Religion can be changed but not eliminated

Doing away with religion is an illogical and unrealistic ideal

I'm all for people expressing their opinions and beliefs in anything, hell run around naked and be a nudist for all i care. All i can say is that religion isn't going away, people seem to need some sort of belief to cling to in all the bullshit, some hope; and atheists need their hatred of religion to cling onto. So keeping religion around is a win-win situation.

What I do think should be eliminated is all the people screaming words of hatred, murdering, and being unaccepting all in the name of God; when that goes directly against all the commandments and teachings of God.

Honestly, people will always find an endgame to believe in. Weather it be God, science, evolution, general human kindness, Ktulu, The Flying Spaghetti Monster, or just plain luck. Anyone who tries to convince you otherwise is either horribly misguided, unlearned in psychology, or on a bad ego trip.

That is right. In fact... Certain things that mean offence or that is rebellious may just be ignored and get along with what is the best. There are a ton of things in all the religions that are beautiful. Eliminating anything is a bad idea if it has notions that guide right.

when it comes to religion people are something like patriotic... but some religious leaders are very opportunist because they take advantage their position to be rich and powerful... And i realized that the best way to gain money is through religion...

We are still in terms of evolutionary time quite a young species, the need to explain a highly complex and dynamic world would have in my opinion been the birth of an idea that lead to God.

Religion though I feel is the creation of Humanity, probably originally a set of rituals created to bring about favorable circumstances in any particular pre-societies' environment.

I like to imagine that one early Homo had a member of their family that maybe did a particular dance that brought rain when desperately needed, word spreads, Chinese whispers exaggerate claims and people start to think this person has a connection with the powers of the earth. Humans being enthusiastic copiers imitated the actions of those they believed had the power as this would no doubt yield power over their people.

Roll on the centuries and it evolves into an organisation, power in numbers, and more power to those that can be at the top of this pyramid, rules that bring about subjugation, inspire guilt and threaten the nature of the infinite existence of the "soul" keep the people in check and willing to die.

Human knowledge evolves, science starts to explain things about the existence and nature of our universe; this does not mean that God does not exist. The format of Religion I believe will as you point out change. Who's to say that Physics will not eventually just uncover the way a God works, or at least come close.

I think that there is maybe much that Humanity will never know, people like, and gain comfort from the idea of a creator. I just think we are outgrowing old Dogma and forming a new way to respect and admire our Universe, through trying to understand it. There maybe many more millions of years for humanity left so who's to say where we will evolve too. One thing I do commit to is the fact that the old religious way is wrong and dangerous.

You can change your outfit but surely will always wear some clothing. Religion is no different.

Side: I realize this

But religion has to adapt to the times or else it is viewed as jaded, especially by contemporary youth.

It's too bad that a lot of religious people despise change.

Just for fun, I'll point this poppycock but totally real bullshit out:

The Singularity will rid the world of religion!

Once our technological intelligence reaches a point of immortality and totally compassion, we will not only know everything about the universe, but we will purge all irrational maliciousness~! Religion may or may not stay, but it's foundations of bigotry and death and hate will be ripped up from the ground and turned to ashes!

The Singularity will rid the world of religion!

Sounds like singularity is just a new word for god and the use of the word religion can be metaphorically interpreted as being part of "evil" that we are to await being saved from.

we will-snip-know everything about the universe

Notions of omniscience.....Hey you ARE just disguising bad old fashioned theistic thought with modern sounding terms

we will purge all irrational maliciousness~!

Woops! can you spot the seed of bigotry in that statement?

Religion may or may not stay, but it's foundations of bigotry and death and hate will be ripped up from the ground and turned to ashes!

Why do you think religion has "bigotry and death and hate" as it's foundation? Couldn't it be that religion was initially founded for pure and good reasons and later became corrupted by such things?

Lol, you already know I was being mostly silly. So I'll just be serious about it this time. :P I am aware of what religion does and it's purpose and it's meaning. I know it was never intended to be bad, but unfortunately, it was created by man, and it therefore has all the flaws of man. Maybe it has good intentions, but honestly, it's killed too many people on this Earth for it's good to outweigh it's bad.

So it's neutral.

Like humanity.

But the point of getting rid of it... the Singularity is the point in which we create a computer smarter then every last human being on the planet Earth combined. This will likely happen one day, in the possibly near future even, because our computers have been getting exponentially smart since they were first created.

Once we create a computer that smart, it and humanity will create an even smarter computer, then another smarter computer, then another... etc. Eventually they will be so smart that they will be able to postule the answers to absolutely everything, including immortality and the purpose of meaning.

In fact, there's already a group of scientists around who exist to prepare humankind for the Singularity. :P They want to make sure the deifically-intelligent computers will be nice and not cold, logical murders.

Once we have answers to everything, religion will cease to exist.

Religion was not founded on bigotry and death it has been human kind who has warped religion and made it into something ugly, like we do with most things. No amount of technology or advancement is really going to improve the simple nature of stupidity, and the animalistic nature of violence. All of human kind would have to be eliminated to do that.Really you kind of sound like an apocalyptic nut job with all that computer stuff, been watching too may sci-fi movies lately?

Religion was founded by man, therefore it was founded on flaws. Anyone can argue that their religion wasn't because their God or prophet was not flawed, but nobody knows that because all religious scripts were written by men, flawed men. No one knows anything about the founding of religion except that it was founded off the ideas of men. And all men are flawed.

You don't think that we can evolve past violence and evil and ignorance? You have very little faith in humanity then. It doesn't even need to be because of science, we will always have the potential to become greater then we are now as long as we work towards it. That's why homo-erectus evolved into man. NO, I'm not saying he worked hard to evolve, but he did work hard to survive and be better above all other animals.

Technology allows us to improve the quality of life. We have done nothing to hold back the advancement of our technology. It gets better and better every day. What goes into it's purpose? Good things. We make more medicine and robots and helpful machinary. Do you really think that our advancement and use of technology isn't going to help us get smarter and evolve?

That's idiotic.

The Singularity is not a conspiracy theory. It is not a cult. It is not a religion. It is a speculation that, since, our computers and technology are exponentially getting smarter, they will eventually be smarter then us, and therefore they will be able to learn things that we cannot. If they can learn things we can't, what could those things be? The meaning of life? The cure for all disease? Who the hell knows. I don't. That doesn't change the fact that our technology gets better and better every day. Only an apolocalypse is going to stop that advancement.

So, are you going to assert that that advancement IS going to be halted by what? The Rapture? Who's thinking up a fantasy now, genius?

I'm not saying God is going to appear before us, I'm saying that our computers will one day be smarter then every single last human on the planet combined. What happens after that is unknown. But since I have faith in the greater good, I'm hoping that only good will come out of it.

Being a physics major and an optimist, I can say that religion could be eliminated. Religion entails a belief in a supernatural power that is often worshiped. Those concepts are fairly primitive, yes. I can agree that with rapid scientific advancements the religious community will greatly decrease, but not be eliminated. I think once physics finds the answers to the origin of the Universe's existence religion will begin its final phase on the path to extinction.
